BRADY

On 26 June 1833, Philip and Mary Winefred Brady arrived in Hobart as bounty immigrants with their four children. Philip Brady was a painter aged 36, his wife aged 32. They were given the sum of £20 and travelled on board the Strathfieldsay. Philip Brady was born in Dublin, Ireland c. 1796 and his wife c. 1800. When they left Ireland, the children had the following ages: John Brady 7, Francis Brady 4, Mary Ann Brady 2 and Elizabeth 6 months old. The family settled in Hobart Town. A list of commuted pensioners dated 1 October 1836 provides information of the military career of Philip Brady before he emigrated to Van Diemen’s Land. He was a soldier in the 8th Foot Regiment. Unfortunately, records at the National Archives in London show no Philip Brady for the lists of soldiers in the 8th Regiment in the late 1820s and early 1830s.

According to the census of 1842 Philip Brady and his family were living in a weatherboard house, 11 Molle St., owned by Mr Lyons. It is probable that the youngest child, Elizabeth, had died by this time as only three children were identified in the census.

In a later census of 1848 the Brady family were living at 57 Macquarie St. in a wooden house owned by Philip Brady. Eight people were living there, including two unmarried males in private service (convicts) and a single male who was born in the colony.

Mary Brady died in Geeveston, 8 April 1857, aged 56. She was buried at St. Mary's, Hobart, together with her son Francis, (his daughter Louisa) and her son John. The following death notice appeared: 'At Honeywood Huon on the Evening of Wednesday the 8th inst. Mary beloved wife of Mr. P. Brady aged 56 years. The funeral will take place this day; at 2 p.m. from Mr. Robert Jefferies, Macquarie Street, when friends are invited to attend.'

Philip Brady died in the Franklin area (probably at Geeveston), 10 April 1878 aged 83.
